GEMS Information
What is GEMS?
Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) is a program of the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1984, at least 8 million students have enjoyed GEMS activities. GEMS provides leadership workshops and other support for teachers through a network of regional sites and centers.
GEMS guides make it possible for all teachers to teach key science and math concepts using the inquiry-based approach called for in the National Science Education Standards and other leading benchmarks, guidelines and frameworks, as well as the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Teachers need not have special backgrounds in science or math to use GEMS. The guides include step-by-step instructions for activities that use easily obtained and inexpensive materials.
What it Means to be a GEMS Site
We are the only GEMS Site in the state of Nevada! As a GEMS site, we will provide training sessions throughout the year along with on-going support to teachers. GEMS guides and handbooks are available for purchase. Teachers who have completed the Leadership Workshop may check out kits for professional development and a limited number may be check out for classroom use at their site. A complete library of GEMS guides is available for any teacher to check out from the Gleason Professional Development Library.
